Computer systems and software developer IBM and its Canadian partner Bycast of Vancouver, British Columbia, debuted a medical archive package for medical equipment leasing yesterday at the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) meeting in Orlando, FL.
IBM Healthcare and Life Science's Grid Medical Archive Solution (GMAS) is a grid-powered storage system that helps PACS easily access data such as medical files, documents, and images.
Based on IBM's TotalStorage and eServer software, as well as Bycast's StorageGRID software, the package brings scalable virtualized storage solutions to large and medium-sized healthcare organizations, according to Armonk, NY-based IBM.
Hospitals can use GMAS with existing PACS applications to allow patient data to be shared across networks and stored for more complete patient histories over time. The package's Information Lifecycle Management capability allows GMAS to prioritize studies and store them appropriately, with high-value studies kept online, and less important data stored offline. IBM said it designed GMAS to allow for easy technology upgrades, so that new hardware can be added and data automatically transferred.
