SonoSite launches needle tracking tool

Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite of Bothell, WA, has launched a new technology designed to improve ultrasound-based tracking of needles in anesthesia procedures.

The company's enhanced needle visualization technology is designed to address the "disappearing needle" phenomenon, in which needles are difficult to track at steep angles during deep-needle procedures.

The technology intensifies the brightness of needles, making them easier to track on ultrasound. It can be operated with an on/off button, and should enable physicians to decrease procedure time and reduce costs, according to the company.

Enhanced needle visualization is available as a software upgrade on SonoSite's M-Turbo and S Series product lines, and works with the HFL50 and HFL38 transducers for peripheral nerve block applications. The company also plans to roll it out for other clinical applications.
