Teleradiology firm sets up Haiti link

A U.S. teleradiology firm has set up a link with a children's hospital in Haiti to help diagnose patients injured in the massive January 12 earthquake.

Complete Radiology Reading Services (CRRS) set up the link between its reading facility in Westbury, NY, and St. Damien pediatric hospital in Haiti via the firm's PACS software (Opal-Rad, Viztek, Garner, NC). A test case was sent from St. Damien's to CRRS at midnight on January 31.

The linkup is complicated by the fact that the hospital server running Opal-Rad also doubles as a PC for St. Damien's employees to send e-mail and perform other computer functions. CRRS plans to contact computer manufacturers to see if a second server can be donated to exclusively run the PACS software.

CRRS has offered to donate its teleradiology reading services to St. Damien's. The firm estimates that about 40 studies are being performed per day, most of them radiography exams.
