Veran inks deal with Medtronic

Surgical planning firm Veran Medical Technologies of St. Louis has signed a deal with medical device firm Medtronic of Minneapolis for electromagnetic navigation technology.

Veran has received a worldwide license to Medtronic patents covering electromagnetic navigation and registration and intends to use the technology in its IG4 - X-Thoracic navigation system, which uses moving 3D image data (4D) to navigate surgical instruments within organs. The company believes the system is superior to conventional navigation techniques based on 2D CT data by enabling surgeons to approach lesions from an oblique angle.

Veran intends to launch an IG4 - Endobronchial navigation system, which is pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
