Miscellaneous Findings on Gallium Scintigraphy:
Decreased hepatic uptake:
Severe hepatic parenchymal disease
Iron overload (Multiple transfusions): Results in saturation of transferrin binding sites with increased renal excretion of unbound Ga-67
Recent chemotherapy (within 24 hours, especially vincristine): Due to hepatotoxic effect. Reticuloendothelial cells are not affected, however, and a Tc-SC scan will be normal.
Secondary to increased bone uptake: Commonly seen in:
- Leukemia
- Elevated transferrin levels: Commonly secondary to multiple or recent blood transfusions
Persistent (beyond 24 hours) prominent renal activity:
- Iron overload (Multiple Transfusions)
- Lymphoma
- Nephrotoxic drugs: Chemotherapeutic agents such as cytoxan and vincristine.
- Hepatic failure
- Vasculitis
- Renal amyloidosis
- Acute pyelonephritis- typically focal
Diffuse increased colonic activity :
- Inflammatory conditions:
- Ulcerative colitis/Crohn's
- Pseudomembranous colitis
