Medicare reimbursement for CT and MRI exams performed at private practices have decreased dramatically over the past decade for radiologists, and even more so for physicians of other specialties, according to an article published in the January issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Nodules on CT lung screening predict long-term cancer risk
The presence of noncalcified nodules on CT lung screening exams -- including small, stable nodules -- was associated with increased cancer risk as many as 12 years after baseline screening in a secondary analysis of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), published in the January issue of Lung Cancer.

4D CT sheds light on post-TAVR treatment strategies
4D CT scans showed that an anticoagulant-based treatment strategy was more effective than antiplatelet medication at reducing the risk of valve leaflet abnormalities after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in a recent study, published in the January 9 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Radiologists from Johns Hopkins University applied cinematic rendering to the clinical management of congenital vascular anomalies and uncovered critical features of patient anatomy and pathology that were not evident using traditional volume rendering techniques or conventional CT.

Researchers from various U.S. institutions reported the presence of calcified plaques on the CT scans of mummies of 16th-century Inuits who favored a marine-based diet -- confounding current understanding of risk factors for atherosclerosis -- in a research letter published online December 27 in JAMA Network Open.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
