CT lung screening may benefit racial minorities most
Despite decreasing overall lung cancer mortality rates in the U.S., the racial disparity in deaths from the disease continues to widen. Tailoring CT lung cancer screening programs to inner-city, high-risk minority smokers may help bridge the gap, say Illinois researchers in a letter published online August 2 in JAMA Oncology.

Ultralow-dose CT with CAD helps detect lung nodules
An ultralow-dose CT protocol involving computer-aided detection (CAD) matched the accuracy of standard CT for identifying lung nodules at just 10% of the radiation dose of a standard scan, according to an article published online July 25 in the Journal of Thoracic Imaging.

Is CT or US better for diagnosing gallbladder infection?
CT was found to be considerably more accurate than ultrasound at identifying acute cholecystitis in a new study, published in the August issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology. But is that enough evidence for CT to oust ultrasound as the imaging modality of choice? Probably not, say researchers from New Mexico.

CT scans may be linked to brain cancer in kids
Could exposure to CT radiation increase the risk of brain tumors in kids? Yes, say researchers from the Netherlands, who reported a 1.5-fold increase in cancer incidence for children in an article published online July 18 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

CCTA biomarker spots high-risk plaques in heart disease
An increase in pericoronary adipose tissue attenuation -- a biomarker associated with inflammation -- on coronary CT angiography (CCTA) scans was associated with vulnerable plaques and may help predict the risk of heart disease, according to an article published online July 18 in JAMA Cardiology.

New Zealand start-up scans 1st humans with spectral CT
Researchers from a start-up company in New Zealand have scanned the first humans with a spectral CT scanner based on solid-state digital detectors. The technology produces color images at much higher levels of resolution than traditional CT scanners and, thus, may improve diagnosis.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
