Is fluoroscopy or CT guidance best for spinal injections?
CT guidance allowed interventional radiologists to perform spinal injections just as effectively as they did using traditional fluoroscopy but with much lower personal radiation exposure, according to an article published online January 8 in Radiology. The cost? Increased radiation exposure to patients.

Expeditors can help improve emergency CT workflow
Could a staff member assigned to serve as a dedicated expeditor in the emergency department boost the efficiency of CT exams? Most assuredly, say researchers from New York, who found the new role helped reduce CT turnaround times by more than 20%. Their findings were published online in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Will new USPSTF review lead to CT colonography payment?
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has opened a review of its recommendations for colorectal cancer screening. While the USPSTF already recommends the use of CT colonography for colon screening, proponents of the virtual exam hope the new review will prompt Medicare to pay for the exam -- which, so far, it has resisted.

Emphysema progression with hole changes, with holes colored according to their diameter in 2-mm increments. (A) Baseline inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT scans in a 48-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease show emphysema holes with hyperexpansion of secondary pulmonary lobules (white arrows) and thin alveolar walls visible in the right upper lobe. This emphysematous lesion is filled with holes of varying sizes. A single large air cyst was observed in the left upper lobe (black arrows), classified as a single emphysema hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). (B) At six-year follow-up inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT, the holes in the right upper lobe have merged (white arrows), with no visible alveolar septa remaining, resulting in the formation of a large new hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). Meanwhile, the hole in the left upper lobe also enlarged, merging with adjacent holes (black arrows). The size of other holes in the paramedian left upper lobe decreased.

March 12, 2025
MRI scans show two areas of clinically significant prostate cancer in a 65-year-old man with a prostate-specific antigen level of 8.23 ng/mL. Images are (A, E) axial T2-weighted images, (B, F) axial diffusion-weighted images obtained with a b value of 1500 sec/mm2, (C, G) axial apparent diffusion coefficient images, and (D, H) lesion masks generated by the deep learning algorithm (DLA) on T2-weighted images. The DLA detected a lesion in the right posteromedial peripheral zone of the apex (D), which was assigned as Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) 4. A radiologist also detected the lesion and assigned it PI-RADS 4 (arrow in A-C). A lesion in the right anterior transition zone (H) was detected by the DLA, which was assigned PI-RADS 4. The radiologist did not detect the lesion (arrow in E-G). Both lesions were confirmed as prostate cancer with Gleason grade group 2. Caption and image courtesy of RSNA.

An example that features an AI-generated report that identified “scattered pulmonary granulomatous calcifications.” In the first session, three of five readers specifically reported the presence of a nodule. Following the introduction of the AI-generated report, only one reader maintained the specific mention of a nodule, whereas the other four readers adapted their reports to include the AI-suggested terminology of “granulomatous calcifications.” AP = anterior-posterior.
