AJR papers shine spotlight on cinematic rendering
It's been touted as "3D on steroids," but many in radiology still aren't sure how cinematic rendering of medical images works. Fortunately, two papers in the August edition of the American Journal of Roentgenology offer an explanation of the new technique, which creates stunningly lifelike images from scans.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Figure: Improved image quality with a generative adversarial network architecture for low- to high-field-strength image translation, called LowGAN. (A–C) Top: High-field-strength (3-T) and low-field-strength (64-mT) images and LowGAN outputs for a single participant across (A) fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), (B) T1-weighted (T1w), and (C) T2-weighted (T2w) contrasts. Bottom: Graphs demonstrate the structural similarity index (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), normalized cross-correlation (NCC), and feature similarity index (FSIM) between high field strength and low field strength (64-mT) and high field strength and LowGAN outputs. a.u. = arbitrary units.****p ≤ 0.0001.
