SIR: Venous angioplasty relieves multiple sclerosis symptoms
SAN FRANCISCO - A controversial theory that vascular blockages cause multiple sclerosis (MS) found additional support this week at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting. Researchers showed that using vascular angioplasty to clear blocked veins also quelled some MS symptoms.

SIR: Low-dose protocol for CT-guided biopsies cuts radiation
SAN FRANCISCO - Two new studies presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting described how lower CT scanner settings cut patient radiation dose by two-thirds during CT-guided lung biopsies, and nearly by half for extrapulmonary biopsies and drainages.

Study shows CR exposure creep can be slowed, but is hard to stop
The long-suspected existence of exposure creep has been documented in a long-term study of computed radiography (CR) practices at an Australian teaching hospital. The study highlights the need for uniform exposure standards for CR systems manufactured by different vendors.

Image artifacts degrade digital radiography performance
New forms of image artifacts can compromise the performance of digital radiography (DR) equipment, say researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, in the January issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology. The group described its experience with DR artifacts and how to correct for them.

MRI uncovers cardiovascular risks for 9/11 first responders
Exposure to dust produced from the collapse of the twin towers at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, is subjecting the first responders to that disaster to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, according to results of a study involving dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI.

CT lung screening gets boost by adding COPD sequence
Low-dose CT lung screening has already demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing mortality from lung cancer. Now, Dutch researchers have found that adding a short sequence to the low-dose CT protocol can help the modality detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to a study published on Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
