Rib suppression algorithm enables better chest x-ray imaging
Monday, November 26 | 10:30 a.m.-10:40 a.m. | SSC14-01 | Room S403AThe increasing use of digital radiography has given rise to a host of image processing techniques that can improve image quality and reduce dose. In this Monday morning presentation, researchers report on one such algorithm, which suppresses contrast from the ribs to enable the use of a more optimal imaging protocol.

CT beats radiography for assessing spondyloarthritis
Sunday, November 25 | 11:45 a.m.-11:55 a.m. | SSA14-07 | Room E451BCT is better than radiography for assessing the sacroiliac joints in patients with spondyloarthritis, Canadian researchers confirmed, and CT-based criteria should be developed for guiding therapy of these individuals.

GAO attacks imaging self-referral, requests pay cut for exams
A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) takes a hard line on physician self-referral of imaging services, detailing more than $100 million in annual unnecessary spending in CT and MRI alone. The report recommends steps to curb the practice, including a pay cut for self-referred imaging studies.

A 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with ER-positive (Allred score 8) ILC in her right breast. Ultrasound and MRI found prominent lymph nodes in right axillary level I area, diagnosed as metastasis on ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. F-18 FES-PET/CT showed a positive mass in right breast (white arrow; SUVmax, 5.6) and multiple F-18 FES–positive lymph nodes in right axillary level I, II, and II/III junction areas (red arrows; SUVmax, up to 12.2). In addition, a small F-18 FES-positive lymph node was observed in the right second internal mammary area (red circles; SUVmax, 1.8). However, biopsy could not be performed because it was too small and not visible on ultrasound; the clinician decided to include internal mammary lymph node in treatment field for adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient underwent lumpectomy with ALN dissection, with five metastases being identified in 13 lymph nodes dissected, and is scheduled to receive adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
