Lung abnormalities at CT linked to in-hospital death
In critically ill patients, the presence of interstitial lung abnormalities detected on CT scans increases a patient's risk of dying in the hospital, concludes a recent study. But the modality can help by diagnosing more patients and identifying those at greater risk.

COPD severity mirrors lung cancer incidence
A new analysis of patients who participated in the National Lung Screening Trial shows a clear relationship between the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer incidence at screening. The findings suggest that COPD patients should be included in CT lung screening programs.

Radiologists show no radiation-related mortality risk
Radiologists who started practice after 1940 face no increased risk of mortality compared to other physicians who aren't exposed to radiation as part of their jobs, according to a large new study published July 19 in Radiology. The results are a credit to long-term efforts to reduce occupational radiation exposure, the researchers said.

C-RADS reporting adds value to CT colonography
The use of the CT Colonography Reporting and Data System (C-RADS) has brought a standardized approach to risk assessment and management of findings both inside and outside the colon, paving the way to high-quality population-based colorectal cancer screening, according to an article in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

CT technique tames Tower of Babel from different IR schemes
The use of iterative reconstruction (IR) is leading to ever-lower levels of CT radiation dose. But it's also creating a modern-day Tower of Babel when comparing scans reconstructed with different IR schemes. Fortunately, a talk at the recent International Society for Computed Tomography 2016 Symposium revealed how to tame the confusion.

ISCT: Stroke panel weighs optimal imaging approach
Choosing acute stroke patients for reperfusion therapy means identifying their TRAIT -- that is, their treatment-relevant acute imaging target, according to a talk on Thursday at the International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) 2016 Symposium in San Francisco. But the optimal imaging approach is decidedly undecided.

ISCT: Are lung cancer screening programs worth the trouble?
SAN FRANCISCO - Is setting up a lung cancer screening program worth it? The answer depends on many things, including one's tolerance for the hours, costs, and administrative work -- versus the honor of doing some good in the world, concluded a Wednesday talk at the International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) 2016 Symposium.

ISCT: Is CT perfusion dead beyond the head?
SAN FRANCISCO - Whether or not CT perfusion (CTP) is justified beyond the brain is a tough call -- so tough, in fact, that organizers of the International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) 2016 Symposium decided to debate the question. CTP can be a powerful tool, they said, but its utility is less certain than its generous radiation dose.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
