Can AI help chest DDR achieve clinical adoption?
Chest dynamic digital radiography (DDR) may have received a boost toward clinical use in patients with lung disorders, with researchers developing AI to perform time-consuming analysis involved in the technology.

(a) Raw example of a dynamic digital radiograph. (b) Contrast equalization using contrast-limited adaptive equalization shows improved anatomical visualization. (c) Training data is generated through manually labeling using SLEAP’s graphical user interface. (d-e) Neural network detection schematic. For each quadrant a series of two networks were used. The first identifies the quadrant center, the second using input of the first, then identifies individual anatomical landmarks within a quadrant. (d) Four neural networks were trained, each with the objective of identifying a chest quadrant centroid. The four separate quadrants are visualized as colored boxes (right upper quadrant, green; right lower quadrant, blue; left upper quadrant, red; left lower quadrant, yellow). (e) Serial centroid then anatomical identification. Two quadrant examples showing confidence maps of trained neural networks identifying quadrant centroids (left) and then anatomical confidence maps (right). PET/MRI may improve diagnosis of Cushing disease
PET/MRI could become the diagnostic method of choice over MRI alone for identifying small pituitary tumors associated with Cushing disease.
March 29, 2024
T1-weighted postgadolinium MR images (A and C) and F-18 FET-PET/MR images (B and D) centered at pituitary before (A and B) and after (C and D) transsphenoidal surgery. This patient with Cushing disease showed clear focal uptake (B) but no clear lesion on previously obtained and accompanying MRI (A). Postoperative tissue analysis did confirm resection of small pituitary adenoma/PitNET, and postoperative F-18 FET-PET showed no residual uptake (D). Image courtesy of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

Adding MBI to DBT finds more breast cancers
By Amerigo Allegretto
Adding molecular breast imaging (MBI) to DBT screening leads to more invasive cancers detected in women with dense breasts.
September 23, 2025
Images in a 62-year-old woman who presented for screening. (A) Image from DBT screening (the synthesized 2D mediolateral oblique view of the left breast is shown) at year on was interpreted as negative and showing heterogeneously dense breast. (B) Image from molecular breast imaging screening (mediolateral oblique view) at year one reveals a 0.9-cm non-mass focal area of uptake in the left breast (arrow). (C) Targeted ultrasound scan (transverse image) shows a suspicious mass in the 3-o’clock position of the left breast, 4 cm from the nipple. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy and lumpectomy revealed a 0.9-cm grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, an estrogen receptor–negative, progesterone receptor–negative, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative lesion, with two sentinel nodes negative (N0).
