A health system in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has notified the provincial government that it is opening a review of mammography exams performed in the system for signs of "diagnostic discrepancies."

Central Health advised the provincial government that it has discovered that some workstations used for digital review of mammography images "did not meet the recommended technical standard for the review of mammography images."

Central Health said it is addressing the issue and is notifying anyone whose mammography exams may have been impacted by the discrepancies. The health system will give a formal update on August 24, and it also plans to notify patients by phone and letter.

The health system said that scheduled mammography exams will continue as planned and will "be read to technical standards."
