FDA clears Hologic's breast density assessment software

Women's imaging firm Hologic has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Quantra 2.2 breast density assessment software.

The new software uses an algorithm to analyze the distribution and texture of breast tissue in mammography images, which enables physicians to provide patient-specific breast density assessments during routine breast cancer screenings.

The Quantra software is available for Hologic's 3D Mammography system, both of which are on display at this week's RSNA 2017 meeting in Chicago.

A normal mammogram confirmed by three-year radiologic follow-up illustrates reader-marked regions of interest (ROIs) during (A) unaided (round 1) and (B) artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted (round 2) reading.
