Ill. adds breast tomo to insurance coverage

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), also known as 3D mammography, will be covered by insurance in Illinois next year.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed SB 54, which amends the insurance code by adding DBT to the list of definitions of low-dose mammograms. As a result, the insurance mandate will cover 3D mammograms as well as traditional 2D mammograms. The bill was sponsored by Sen. John Mulroe (D-Chicago).

The law will go into effect on July 1, 2016.
