The Georgia radiologic technologist who falsified mammography records has been hit with $200,000 in punitive damages in civil lawsuits filed by two women affected in the case.
Rachael Michelle Rapraeger was assessed the penalties by a Bibb County Superior Court judge, according to an article in the Telegraph of Macon. They come in addition to criminal penalties assessed against her, including a sentence of up to six months in a probation-detention facility and 10 years of probation. Rapraeger began serving her sentence two weeks ago, according to the newspaper.
Rapraeger pleaded guilty to marking nearly 1,300 screening mammograms as having been read by a radiologist, when they actually hadn't been interpreted. Her attorney said she was feeling overwhelmed by her workload at Perry Hospital in Perry, GA.
The two civil suits are among 17 lawsuits filed against Rapraeger in connection with the case by women who claimed to have emotional distress from needing to receive repeat mammograms. Ten women of the 1,300 are believed to have cancer, and two have since died, the newspaper reported.
Rapraeger is not believed to have any assets to pay the civil damages claim, according to the Telegraph.

![A normal mammogram confirmed by three-year radiologic follow-up illustrates reader-marked regions of interest (ROIs) during (A) unaided (round 1) and (B) artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted (round 2) reading. Each colored dot represents an ROI for recall by a human reader. Readers could mark more than one ROI per case, represented by multiple dots of the same color. During AI-assisted reading, the AI system displayed three visible prompts: two with suspicion of malignancy scores of 35% (left mediolateral oblique [L MLO] and craniocaudal [L CC]) and one with a suspicion of malignancy score of 10% (right craniocaudal [R CC]), shown as polygonal overlays. Without AI, six of 10 readers (60%) marked a false-positive ROI. With AI assistance, this fell to two of 10 (20%). R MLO = right mediolateral oblique.](https://img.auntminnie.com/mindful/smg/workspaces/default/uploads/2026/07/2026-07-14-radiology-mammogram-ai-auto-bias.H0bYO8QlWs.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&fit=crop&h=112&q=70&w=112)
