Imaging Diagnostic Systems (IDSI) of Plantation, FL, has released the results of a clinical study using its CT laser mammography (CTLM) technology as an adjunct to conventional mammography for detecting occult cancers in dense breasts.
The four-site North American study reviewed 705 breasts of 515 patients; 451 cases included biopsies. In the dense-breast population, the adjunctive use of CTLM, classifying ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) as malignant, increased sensitivity from 50% to 58% over mammography alone and improved specificity from 76% to 87%.
When DCIS is classified as premalignant, the figures changed slightly, increasing sensitivity from 44% to 56% over mammography alone and improving specificity from 74% to 84%.
