Digital x-ray developer Bioptics of Tucson, AZ, will showcase its work-in-progress direct digital mammography cassette, piXarray8100 FFDM-DR, designed to upgrade analog systems to direct digital.
The cassette fits into the standard bucky of film-screen mammography equipment, is fully DICOM-compatible, does not require external digitizers, and provides 50-micron true digital resolution within seven seconds of x-ray exposure. Bioptics received a small business grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for completing piXarray8100 FFDM-DR; pending U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance, the company expects to begin shipping systems in the second quarter of 2007.
Also in its booth, Bioptics will exhibit its piXarray 100 Digital Specimen Radiography System, a portable digital radiography unit for core biopsy and surgical biopsy specimens. The device can also be used in applications such as breast core biopsy, surgical biopsy, lumpectomy, and excisional biopsy. The device was cleared by the FDA last October.
