PACS vendor Brit Systems introduced a new module for viewing full-field digital mammography (FFDM) studies as a work-in-progress at last week's Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) meeting in Austin, TX.
The viewer can be added to the Dallas company's PACS viewer, Radiology Workbench for Linux, and can accept images from any FFDM system cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It also works with digitized film from an analog mammography unit.
The module provides mammography reading tools such as support for overlays from computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, overreading tools with statistics, special hot keys and icons, and automated hanging protocols. It also supports color images and review and analysis of multimodality images. Commercial availability of the module is expected in September 2006.
In other SCAR new product introductions, Brit introduced a new tool for its PACS software designed to reduce diagnostic errors that occur when emergency room physicians read imaging studies during overnight shifts. The company's new "discordance tool" lets ER doctors communicate their findings to radiologists; if radiologists have a different interpretation, they can communicate it to ER physicians, enabling them to improve their diagnostic accuracy in the future. The discordance tool will be available in July 2006.
Finally, Brit showed enhancements to the dashboard management system that it first demonstrated at the 2005 RSNA meeting. The dashboard enables PACS administrators to view statistics such as database capacity and CPU load, while the new enhancements include better visualization tools and easy-to-use management tools. The new enhancements will also be available in July 2006.
