At the 2003 RSNA show, Bedford, MA-based Hologic displayed a new, work-in-progress device it calls a full-field digital breast tomosynthesis research system.
The technology acquires a series of images in slices of 1 mm or less and reconstructs them into a 3-D presentation. Hologic hopes the system will reduce or eliminate the appearance of overlapping tissue on a breast image, which can hide lesions.
The company is developing breast tomosynthesis as an add-on to its Selenia FFDM platform, and plans to investigate whether the technology will also offer a way to image the breast with less compression, as well as whether it can be used with needle localization and biopsy procedures. The company also will determine whether the system should be used as a screening and diagnostic modality or as an adjunct to conventional mammography screening, according to chairman and CEO Jack Cumming. Hologic has yet to submit an application for the system to the Food and Drug Administration.
