Bone densitometry and digital x-ray vendor Hologic has clarified its position on Trex Medical’s CCD-based digital mammography system, following comments by Hologic chairman and CEO David Ellenbogen in a conference call last week regarding Hologic’s planned acquisition of Trex.
During the call, Ellenbogen said that Hologic planned to discontinue Trex’s CCD-based full-field digital mammography system, preferring to focus its full-field efforts on amorphous selenium flat-panel detector technology from subsidiary Direct Radiography.
Product decisions have not yet been made, however, according to Steve Nakashige, president and COO at Bedford, MA-based Hologic.
"We have two great opportunities in front of us, both of which could provide excellent digital solutions to the market," he said. "We’re still evaluating the technologies at this point in time."
Factors to be evaluated in the decision include potential time to market, performance characteristics, and time to achieve regulatory approvals, Nakashige said.
"Based on that evaluation, we will move rapidly to develop a solution for full-field," he said.
