Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite's plans for RSNA 2006 include the introduction of a new high-frequency transducer, enhancements for wireless connectivity and security, and additional capabilities for the company's MicroMaxx system.

The new MicroMaxx enhancements improve the system's performance in anesthesiology, cardiology, emergency medicine, and pediatric radiology, according to the Bothell, WA-based company. Current customers can upgrade existing MicroMaxx systems to the new capabilities via compact flash (CF) cards, and SonoSite will begin customer shipments by the end of November.

On the new transducer front, C11e/8-5 is a new microconvex array for enhanced image quality to visualize the delivery of regional anesthesia and line placement, as well as imaging of the pediatric abdomen for optimal anesthesia and pediatric radiology studies.

Another new transducer, P17/5-1, is a phased-array probe designed for cardiac, transcranial, and abdominal imaging, as well as ob/gyn applications and the focused abdominal sonography for trauma (FAST) exam. Its 2D imaging performance has been enhanced with clutter reduction, improved harmonics, and increased imaging penetration to 35 cm.

Finally, MicroMaxx now features an 80211b/g card for wireless connectivity and better security. The MicroMaxx still weighs less than 8 lb and includes a five-year warranty, according to the company.
