Toxicity levels with gynecologic chemoradiation deemed acceptable
By
Shalmali Pal
CHICAGO - Acute toxicities experienced by women undergoing chemoradiation treatment for gynecologic malignancies were well-tolerated in a recent study, according to a presentation Wednesday at the 2007 RSNA meeting. In addition, toxicity was no worse than treatment with radiation alone, the researchers reported.

Cell survival offers IMRT insight on 'bystander effect'
By
Tami Freeman
In vitro experiments have revealed the existence of new bystander effects, in which cell survival is increased when nearby cells are irradiated. Australian researchers examined cell survival following exposure to spatially modulated beams to gain insight into the radiobiology underlying intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and help radiation oncologists reap the maximum benefit from this advanced technique.

ASTRO studies delve into pre-, post-treatment outcomes for partial-breast irradiation
By
Shalmali Pal
A major trial of accelerated partial-breast irradiation (APBI) is currently under way to compare APBI with whole-breast irradiation (WBI) for local tumor control after lumpectomy. But other researchers have begun using its APBI protocol in their own studies. A group from Ohio looked at the role of breast MRI in managing early breast cancer in patients treated with the APBI protocol, while another U.S. group studied skin toxicity and cosmetic outcome with APBI and chemotherapy, and a third team tested three different image-guidance systems for APBI.

Gold marker implants for prostate radiotherapy safe, study finds
By
Kate Madden Yee
Transrectal gold marker implantation for prostate position verification in radiotherapy is safe and well-tolerated, according to Dutch researchers. They analyzed the complication rates and identified the risk factors for complications in more than 200 prostate cancer patients who had received gold markers transrectally with ultrasound guidance.

Studies find no drop in head/neck cancer control with less extensive dissection
By
Shalmali Pal
A pair of studies presented at the recent 2007 American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Los Angeles focused on managing postradiation head and neck cancer. The first looked at whether response to radiotherapy can be used to determine the extent of surgical dissection in positive lymph nodes. The second inquired if adjuvant neck dissection can be deferred in patients with complete response to chemoradiation.
