Accuray posts rise in sales, profit for Q1

Radiotherapy firm Accuray of Sunnyvale, CA, enjoyed growth in revenues and net income for the company's first quarter of fiscal 2008.

For the period (end-September 29), Accuray posted sales of $48.6 million, up 48% compared to first-quarter fiscal 2007 total revenue of $32.8 million. The company also saw higher profit, with net income of $2.3 million, compared with net income of $2 million in the same quarter of 2007.

In other news, the company launched a series of new products at last month's American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Los Angeles.

Iris Collimator is an upgrade for Accuray's flagship CyberKnife system that uses a variable-aperture collimator that enables users to vary the size and shape of the radiation beam without having to remove a collimator. Iris allows CyberKnife to deliver different-sized beams for each treatment position, making multiple collimator-sized treatments much faster, according to the company. Iris Collimator is shipping on new CyberKnife systems, and is available as an upgrade to units installed in the field.

Accuray is also making available a more powerful linear accelerator for CyberKnife, capable of delivering 800 monitor units (MU) per minute of radiation dose, compared to 600 MU/min on the older linac. The more powerful linac can deliver higher radiation doses to tumors, thus reducing treatment times.

Finally, Accuray introduced a sequential optimization planning tool for its MultiPlan treatment planning system that allows users to optimize their treatment objectives based on different clinical situations using prioritized clinical objectives, instead of the traditional trial-and-error setting of various constraints to focus on an optimized treatment, according to the company.
