Virginia Cancer Specialists in Fairfax, VA has been selected by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) as one of the first two authorized user training centers in the U.S. for radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT).
The initiative is designed to address a shortage of supervised training sites for radiation oncologists seeking to offer RPT, according to ASTRO. Virginia Cancer Specialists launched its RPT program in 2014 and will provide hands-on supervised patient case experience, multidisciplinary mentorship, and practical implementation guidance for building a compliant RPT program.
RPT uses targeted radioactive molecules to deliver tumor-specific radiation and is most commonly used for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. The program at Virginia Cancer Specialists is led by radiation oncologists Harold Agbahiwe, MD, and Gregory Sibley, MD, with Youssef Charara, PhD, serving as chief medical physicist.
