UNC Health is deploying Mevion Medical System’s S250-FIT Proton Therapy System to expand access to proton technology in cancer treatment.
UNC Health said that it will convert an existing LINAC treatment room to support proton therapy within its established oncology ecosystem, with the aim of streamlining care delivery and expanding access to advanced radiation treatment, as well as preserving continuity for patients and care teams.
Proton therapy enables highly precise radiation delivery while minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. This makes it an important approach in treating tumors near critical organs and in complex cases, UNC Health and Mevion explained.
The S250-FIT Proton Therapy System is a compact, single-room proton therapy platform, enabling ready integration within existing facilities while reducing infrastructure complexity, Mevion said.
The platform also includes DirectARC delivery capability to allow efficient beam delivery and advanced clinical workflows.
According to the organizations, UNC Health’s installation will also include an upright patient positioning system from Leo Cancer Care to support enhanced flexibility in patient setup and future clinical workflows.
