Hitachi said it will deliver its multi-ion particle therapy system to Himed Hospital Management in Xuzhou City of Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China.

The order is Hitachi's first outside of Japan for the system, which can generate both proton and heavy ion in one accelerator. This capability enables more flexible treatment options, according to the vendor.

Himed will use the system for a particle therapy center that it will begin constructing this year in Xuzhou City. One 360-degree rotating gantry room will be used for proton therapy, while three fixed-beam rooms will be utilized for carbon therapy.

Other system features include real-time, image-gating motion management for irradiating targeted tumors while in motion, as well as advanced scanning technology for precisely treating tumors with complex shapes. In addition, Hitachi's treatment planning software utilizes imaging data to calculate appropriate dose amounts to provide patient-specific treatment, the company said.

Hitachi acquired the particle therapy business of Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi Electric in 2018.
