Radiation oncology firm Elekta and image-guided therapy firm Brainlab used the venue of the 2012 Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) currently under way in Chicago to announce a joint collaboration in which the firms can use each other's radiation oncology treatment plans.
The collaboration will enable neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists to add the functionality of Brainlab's iPlan RT image software to the optimized dosimetry and precision of Leksell GammaPlan treatment planning software.
The iPlan RT image software, with multimodality image fusion, contouring, atlas-based autosegmentation, fiber tracking, and functional MRI image analysis, offers additional tools to account for organs at risk and other important anatomical and functional structures in the brain.
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is the first hospital to use the combined preplanning and Gamma Knife treatment planning software programs, according to the companies.
