Multimodality vendor Siemens Healthcare has made the first installation of its Somatom Definition Flash CT scanner at a dedicated pediatric hospital.
The Malvern, PA, company installed the system at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, FL. The Somatom Definition Flash was designed to reduce radiation dose to patients, according to the company, and the vendor's X-Care application included on the unit further reduces radiation exposure by as much as 40% to dose-sensitive anatomic regions such as the thyroid, gonads, and breast tissue.
Siemens also said that the scanner's acquisition speed is important in reducing the need for sedation among pediatric patients, who may be too young to follow direction.
