Contrast and virtual colonoscopy developer E-Z-EM of Lake Success, NY, is planning to begin commercial shipments of a new blood analyzer for use with imaging procedures.
The company's EZ Chem blood analyzer is a point-of-care device for conducting blood assays in patients prior to contrast-enhanced MRI and CT scans. EZ Chem analyzes a finger prick sample of blood for levels of creatinine, an indicator of a patient's renal function.
Determining renal function can help determine a patient's ability to safely receive IV contrast prior to CT and MR imaging procedures. The device enables the test to be performed in the imaging suite in as few as 30 seconds, without having to send blood samples to a lab.
The unit was developed by E-Z-EM's development partner, Nova Biomedical of Waltham, MA, and the system has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance.
