A prototype 256-slice detector array was among the highlights in the RSNA booth of Toshiba America Medical Systems, the final company to be featured in our Advances in CT Technology series of video reports from the 2005 RSNA show.
The 256-channel scanner will be able to cover 12.5 cm of patient anatomy in a single gantry rotation, according to the company. A system is in operation in Japan and has been used in clinical studies on human subjects.
The commercial version is still a couple years from market, however. In the meantime Toshiba is highlighting clinical applications on its flagship Aquilion 64 system. Toshiba executives say clinicians are finding the system useful for both cardiac and peripheral vascular applications.
In its RSNA booth, Toshiba touted the scanner's ability to acquire images in 0.5-mm slices, and scan the heart in 6-10 seconds and the peripheral arteries in 12-15 seconds. The company also highlighted new cardiac clinical applications on Aquilion 64 CFX, Toshiba's top-of-the-line cardiac-optimized system.
