Radiographers perform VC with CAD -- and controversy
By
Eric Barnes
A new study from London put radiographers in charge of reading virtual colonoscopy (VC) data, with their performance monitored with computer-aided detection as a second reader. The study raises the question of whether it's inappropriate -- or even dangerous -- to allow nonradiologists to screen with VC.

Swiss study links prostate radiotherapy to higher colon cancer risk
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Prostate cancer patients who receive external-beam radiation therapy had a higher risk of developing colon cancer during their lifetime, but the overall risk may be declining with new technology, Swiss researchers report in a study published in the
International Journal of Cancer
.

Thin slices more important than adequate tube current in VC CAD
By
Eric Barnes
Computer-aided detection (CAD) performance is undaunted by low tube current and its accompanying image noise. But CAD sensitivity is harmed by thicker CT slices, which generally increase the number of missed colorectal polyps in virtual colonoscopy, a new study reveals.

Family history of colon cancer may improve survival
By
Eric Barnes
Among patients with advanced colon cancer undergoing treatment, a family history of the disease is associated with significant reductions in both cancer recurrence and death, according to a study in the
Journal of the American Medical Association
. The risk is further reduced if the patient has more than one first-degree relative affected by the disease.

CT rules out malignancy in most pancreatic cysts
By
Eric Barnes
Today's volumetric MDCT images are yielding a troubling trove of small cystic lesions of the pancreas. The vast majority of such lesions smaller than 3 cm are benign, but it takes a bit of sleuthing to rule out malignancy based on imaging alone.

Gastroenterologist beats radiologist in dual-prep VC match
By
Eric Barnes
In a face-off that's making waves on both sides of the Pacific, a board-certified gastroenterologist outperformed a board-certified radiologist in detecting polyps with virtual colonoscopy, researchers report.

VC radiation dose holds steady overall despite dose modulation
By
Eric Barnes
The radiation dose from virtual colonoscopy (VC) hasn't dropped much since the introduction of dose modulation software on CT scanners, largely because VC providers use it only half the time, according to a new study from the Netherlands, which also demonstrated significantly lower doses for VC screening protocols compared to daily practice protocols.

MRI outperforms MDCT in endoleak detection
By
Wayne Forrest
Multidetector-row CT may soon find itself in competition with MRI for the imaging of endoleaks after endovascular repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms. Researchers found that MRI combined with a high relaxivity contrast agent had "significantly high sensitivity" for endoleak detection after EVAR when compared with MDCT.
