Calif. amends Radiologic Technology Act

Radiologic technologists in California will now be allowed to perform venipuncture for contrast agents under remote supervision, effective January 1, 2026.

Under an amendment (AB 460) to the state’s Radiologic Technology Act signed recently by Governor Gavin Newsom, supervising physicians will no longer be required to be physically present in the facility and available to intervene whenever technologists perform venipunctures.

Alternatively, supervising physicians may be “available immediately via audio and video communication with access to the patient’s medical imaging records and have the ability to intervene by directing other onsite personnel,” according to the legislation. The bill requires facilities to have safety protocols and to have personnel onsite who have the appropriate license to respond to adverse events at the physician’s direction.

The bill’s sponsor, the California Radiological Society, noted that the current law had created significant delays and barriers in access to care, with the absence of an onsite radiologist resulting in postponed critical imaging procedures, particularly in rural community hospitals.
