Mid-size radiology practices may lose $2.6M annually to billing gaps

A research brief published by XiFin and Sage Growth Partners estimates that a mid-size radiology practice submitting 350,000 claims annually at a blended rate of $50 per claim may have more than $2.6 million in annual recoverable revenue cycle opportunity.

This includes $1.75 million from reducing denials and underpayments, $677,000 from operational efficiencies, and $214,000 from patient collections.

The research identifies three interconnected dimensions of revenue cycle opportunity: revenue recovery, operational efficiency, and patient engagement. The firms noted that the same operational gaps often drive claim denials, patient collection shortfalls, and No Surprises Act compliance issues simultaneously. The findings are based on stakeholder interviews, industry data, and segment-specific reimbursement data.

XiFin said it has developed an RCM (Revenue Cycle Management) Opportunity Explorer tool that uses segment-specific benchmarks to help radiology practices and other healthcare organizations estimate revenue cycle gaps based on claim volume, specialty, and average reimbursement rate.
