The American College of Radiology (ACR) announced on November 11 that it would be holding its 2021 annual meeting as a virtual event due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Calling it a "difficult decision," ACR Council Speaker Dr. Richard Duszak said the group made the decision in consideration of the safety of all ACR members and their families, as well as ACR staff. The meeting is scheduled for May 15-19, 2021.

The decision comes as many conference organizers are debating whether to hold their 2021 events virtually or in person. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the entire radiology conference 2020 calendar to shift to virtual events, including major events like RSNA, the European Congress of Radiology, and the ACR's own 2020 meeting.

The ACR said that the 2021 meeting would include matters regarding the governance of the society, as well as educational programming, networking opportunities, and continuing medical education.
