European mammo market on the rise

The European mammography systems market produced $219 million in revenue in 2007 and is expected to reach $346 million in 2014, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Growth is being driven by a shift from analog screening systems to digital mammography units, according to the San Antonio-based firm. Mobile screening units are also expected to experience growth, allowing for screening in rural communities. Limiting factors for the growth of the digital mammography market include the delayed implementation of screening programs in some countries and certain government policies, the company said.

In other developments, prone biopsy units are showing more growth potential in Europe, owing to the technology's cost advantages over upright systems and their enhanced ability to provide biopsy guidance, Frost & Sullivan said.
