Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite has rolled out MicroMaxx, the firm's third-generation hand-carried ultrasound offering.
MicroMaxx weighs less than 8 lb and is the size of a laptop computer, according to the Bothell, WA-based vendor. Suitable for use in both hospital and office-based settings, MicroMaxx features the vendor's Chip Fusion technology, which integrates digital signal processing and multiple ultrasound functions into a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) microchip.
MicroMaxx employs a 128-channel broadband digital beamformer, which is integrated into four proprietary postage stamp-sized ASIC chips, SonoSite said. In addition, the system can be ready to scan in seconds, and can operate on battery power for up to four hours, according to the firm.
The unit includes transducers such as HFL 38/13-6 for breast, small parts, vascular, intima media thickness (IMT), and nerve imaging; P17/6-1 for abdominal, cardiac, and obstetrical scanning; C60e/5-2 for abdominal, obstetrical, and gynecologic scanning; and TEE/8-3 for transesophageal echocardiography scanning.
SonoSite said MicroMaxx includes an option of embedded SonoCalc IMT software for early detection and management of cardiovascular disease. MicroMaxx comes with a standard five-year warranty, and shipments will begin in June.
