Toshiba sponsors Speckle Tracking by Echo substudy

Toshiba America Medical Systems of Tustin, CA, is sponsoring a coronary heart disease study with its wall motion tracking ultrasound technology, the company said.

Speckle Tracking by Echo is a substudy of faCTor64, a study with Intermountain Healthcare of Salt Lake City to assess asymptomatic diabetics using cardiac CT angiography (CTA) with Toshiba's Aquilion 64 multidetector-row CT system.

The substudy evaluates an asymptomatic diabetic population for heart disease by detecting if patients have a reduction in myocardial strain. Strain is the percentage change in muscle as the heart contracts. Any reduction in strain indicates a strong possibility of heart disease, so the patient is sent to CT for further evaluation, according to Toshiba.

Intermountain Healthcare hopes to enroll more than 300 patients from its diabetes registry in the substudy, Toshiba said.
