New cardiac CT society forms

Another academic society for practitioners of cardiac CT has been formed. The new Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCVCT) says it hopes to unify with another cardiac CT society that also formed this month.

The SCVCT held its first meeting in Chicago on January 8, with some 110 people in attendance, according to Dr. Andre Duerinckx, a member of the society's board of directors. Duerinckx said the group's membership consists of radiologists, cardiologists, and surgeons who are conducting cardiac CT imaging, as well as healthcare administrators and industry representatives.

Duerinckx said the society has not taken a position on whether cardiac CT should be conducted by radiologists or cardiologists; it believes that any physician who meets credentialing and training qualifications under development by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, or American College of Radiology should be able to conduct the procedure.

The society's next meeting will occur at the ACC show March 6-9 in Orlando, FL, with another meeting at the North American Society of Cardiac Imaging (NASCI) at Amelia Island, FL, October 8-11. The SCVCT may also conduct a standalone meeting during 2005, Duerinckx said.

The SCVCT is in discussions to unify with another cardiac CT society, the Society for Cardiac Computed Tomography (SCCT), also formed in January. The two sides met to discuss unification at last week's Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) meeting in San Francisco.
