ART Advanced Research Technologies

(Booth 4074) Medical device firm ART Advanced Research Technologies of Montreal plans to exhibit its work-in-progress optical imaging device, SoftScan, in its booth for RSNA attendees.

SoftScan helps radiologists determine whether lesions are malignant or benign, and can be used as an adjunct to mammography, according to the company. The device uses a laser to pulse near-infrared light through breast tissue; a detector on the other side captures the energy and translates data into images. SoftScan is noninvasive, and does not require ionizing radiation or breast compression.

The device is pending U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, but is cleared for use in Europe and Canada; ART is testing SoftScan at five North American hospital centers.
