Hospitals want VNAs; moving to 3D PACS; PACS and the 'ologies

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Tiring, perhaps, of the limitations of proprietary storage solutions, hospitals are increasingly looking to vendor-neutral archives (VNAs) to simplify the way they archive medical imaging data.

In a report by senior editor Erik L. Ridley for our PACS Digital Community, market research firm CapSite describes how demand for VNAs is heating up as hospitals try to tie together multiple disparate software networks, workflow applications, and storage platforms.

Moving to 3D PACS

On the reading side, the growing complexity of medical imaging is leading many radiologists to look at alternative paradigms for image review. One solution is primary 3D image interpretation, according to a presentation to be given at our November 17 virtual conference, PACS in an Age of Change.

David Hirschorn, MD, of Staten Island University Hospital in New York City, will talk about making the migration from PACS software based on traditional 2D interpretation to direct 3D image review.

In another virtual conference presentation, Paul Chang, MD, from the University of Chicago, will discuss how to adapt to the emerging environment in which radiology images become integral parts of the electronic medical record.

This trend will make medical imaging data accessible throughout the healthcare enterprise, but it also has pitfalls in store for the radiology department if you're not prepared. Learn tips for an effective transition in this presentation.

If you're not registered for the conference yet, go to pacschange.auntminnie.com. And if you are registered, mark your calendar for 11 a.m. EST on November 17!
