Cisco enters radiology market

Network hardware and applications developer Cisco Systems has entered the radiology informatics marketplace with new additions to its Medical-Grade Network initiative.

The San Jose, CA-based firm has added a Medical-Grade Network Assessment tool and Cisco e-Radiology software to its product portfolio. The Medical-Grade Network Assessment tool enables healthcare executives to evaluate network capacity and capabilities against the delivery of current and future healthcare services and business objectives.

The Cisco e-Radiology product is a suite of Cisco-powered offerings that combines PACS applications with a converged network to help optimize the transfer, access, and storage of medical images and patient data. The converged network supports integrated real-time video image consultation and voice-recognition technology to streamline reporting, diagnosis, and time to treatment, according to the firm.

In addition, integrated security in the form of a Cisco Security Agent (CSA) ensures network integrity and real-time information access, the company said. Cisco said that Eastman Kodak Health Imaging of Rochester, NY, has made Cisco Security Agent its choice for protecting its PACS and RIS systems. CSA will be integrated into production of all Kodak PACS products beginning in April 2005, Cisco said.

Cisco will be demonstrating its new offerings at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in Dallas later this month.
