Radiation therapy developer Varian Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its On-Board Imager accessory.
Available on Varian’s Clinac and Trilogy medical linear accelerators, On-Board Imager is designed to improve the precision and effectiveness of cancer treatments through more-accurate targeting and tracking of tumors, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor. The device is mounted on a treatment machine via robotically controlled arms, which operate along three axes of motion, Varian said.
An amorphous-silicon flat-panel x-ray detector yields digital images showing internal anatomic landmarks, and can track anatomic motion, Varian said. The company has also incorporated a 150-kV x-ray tube designed to generate high-resolution, CT-quality images from a moving gantry.
