Supportive care continues to gain stature as a critical aspect of the overall care of patients with cancer. As treatment makes new strides, extending the life span of patients and managing symptoms and side effects becomes of increasing importance. Once principally the province of a small group of sub specialists, palliation and supportive measures have moved into mainstream oncology, and the principles and application of such measures need to be understood by all professionals involved in direct cancer care.
