Biennial follow-up exams prove safe for CT lung screening
Biennial CT lung cancer screening is a safe alternative to annual screening, say researchers from Italy. They found that both approaches led to similar reductions in cancer and all-cause mortality in a new analysis of the Multicentric Italian Lung Detection trial published in the September issue of the European Journal of Cancer.

3D-printed head customizes neurosurgery simulation
Researchers from Australia have created a 3D-printed head model, based on a combination of MRI and CT angiography scans, that allows for the realistic simulation of neurosurgical procedures. They discuss the specifics of their method in an article published online August 1 in 3D Printing in Medicine.

PSMA-PET/CT most effective for recurrent prostate cancer
PET/CT is significantly better at detecting prostate cancer recurrence when used with the radiopharmaceutical gallium-68 (Ga-68) prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) than with F-18 fluciclovine, according to an article recently published online in Lancet Oncology.

3D-bioprinted model reproduces heart structure, function
Researchers from Pennsylvania have developed a way to create realistic 3D-bioprinted heart models that reproduce not only the cardiac texture and microstructure of MR images but also cardiac function and cell growth. Their new 3D bioprinting technique is the subject of an article published in the August 2 issue of Science.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
