PET/MRI is making progress in moving from being a research technology to a modality that's used clinically. Radiologists who use it frequently are recognizing its value for several applications, but work remains in convincing referring physicians of its worth.

U.S. team finds favor with new PEM unit
A positron emission mammography (PEM) unit developed in Spain offers key advantages for breast imaging, according to a Mayo Clinic team that has been testing it. The unit offers better resolution than whole-body PET, and it may prove more useful than molecular breast imaging using technetium-99m sestamibi.

For decades, the world of medical imaging has been visualized in shades of gray. But as color is becoming more common, challenges are emerging that mirror those solved years ago in grayscale imaging, namely regarding the use of standards to define the consistency of color images shown on different medical displays.
