Organ doses for CT exams line up with SSDE dose estimates
CHICAGO - Absorbed organ doses are very close to size-specific dose estimates (SSDE) in CT exams of the abdomen and pelvis, confirming the validity of radiology's new and more accurate dose measurement technique, according to a study presented at the RSNA meeting.

Residents need twice the fluoro time to place catheters
CHICAGO - Radiology residents at two large teaching hospitals in Tennessee required twice as long as interventional radiologists to place central venous catheters under fluoroscopy guidance, effectively doubling the radiation dose to the patient, according to a study presented at the 2012 RSNA meeting.

CT emphysema measures higher in former vs. current smokers
CHICAGO - Confirming a counterintuitive finding that researchers will need to explore more fully, current long-term smokers showed lower CT measures of emphysema than former smokers in a study presented on Monday at the RSNA meeting.

MPI used 50 times more often than CCTA, study finds
CHICAGO - Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is vastly underutilized compared to SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in patients with suspected coronary artery disease, despite their status as competitive tests, according to a study presented on Sunday at the RSNA meeting.

New exam structure nixes free ABR study time for residents
Hoping to stanch outbreaks of "board fever" that can sideline radiology departments when fourth-year residents are relieved of clinical duties to cram for their oral boards, the American Board of Radiology (ABR) has revamped its certification process, explaining its rationale for doing so in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

CT procedure volume falls, except for emergency use
After decades of rising CT utilization, U.S. doctors appear to have finally hit the pause button -- and even the reverse button -- reducing their use of CT scans in every setting except emergency radiology, according to a new study in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

CBCT-like angio predicts TACE response a month before MRI
A dual-phase angiography procedure based on conebeam CT (CBCT) principles that was used during transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) can predict treatment response in hepatocellular carcinoma tumors long before MRI is traditionally applied at one-month follow-up, researchers wrote in Radiology.

VC goes extra innings with AAA screening
Virtual colonoscopy can do double duty by screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), according to a study of more than 1,000 individuals. Researchers found that virtual colonoscopy was reliable for detecting AAA or, more commonly, for ruling out the condition.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
