CORE320: CTA-CTP matches SPECT for gauging cardiac disease
The accuracy of 320-detector-row coronary CT angiography (CTA) combined with CT perfusion (CTP) is equivalent to that of SPECT myocardial perfusion for diagnosing functionally significant coronary artery disease, according to results of the prospective, multicenter, international CORE320 trial published in the European Heart Journal.

High-pitch CTPA outperforms standard PE protocol
In patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE), a CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) protocol using high-pitch dual-source electrocardiogram-synchronized helical scanning outperformed standard pulmonary CTA by almost every measure, according to an article in the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Noncathartic CTC prep might boost screening compliance
The use of noncathartic bowel preparation before CT colonography (CTC) delivers good sensitivity for clinically significant polyps, and may also increase colorectal cancer screening compliance, according to a report in the American Journal of Roentgenology.

Breaking bad news: Some docs are more willing than others
It's no surprise that residents and radiologists don't like breaking bad news to patients with serious medical conditions. But a survey from Pakistan suggests some types of medical specialists are more willing to tell patients the awful truth, while others pass the job along to the referring physician.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

Abbreviated MRI suffices in imaging dense breasts
By Amerigo Allegretto
Abbreviated MRI produces images of a comparable quality to that of multiparametric MRI in patients with dense breasts.
May 20, 2025
Abbreviated axial MRI images show a 7-mm irregular mass with irregular margin (arrows) in the right upper inner quadrant with early rapid enhancement (BIRADS 4). The participant was recalled and underwent an MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy that showed sclerosing adenosis with microcalcifications and usual ductal hyperplasia and focal apocrine metaplasia. On the full-protocol images (not shown), the lesion was T2-weighted hypointense and showed diffusion restriction and washout kinetics in the delayed phase, characteristics that would not have reversed the decision to recall the participant.

FAPI-SPECT/CT shows promise diagnosing gastrointestinal cancer

Representative F-18 FDG-PET/CT and Tc-99m FAPI-SPECT/CT scans for five study patients with gastrointestinal cancer. FDG-PET/CT and FAPI-SPECT/CT images show that uptake occurred in metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) (patient number 50, D) and bone metastases (patient number 33, C). FAPI-SPECT/CT outperformed FDG-PET/CT in detecting liver metastases (patient number 3, A; and 15,B) and peritoneal spread metastases (patient number 27, E). Red arrows indicate foci additionally found by FAPI-SPECT/CT.
