For colon cancer patients, CT boosts recurrence detection
For colorectal cancer patients who have undergone curative surgery, follow-up with either CT or a blood test increases the rate at which they'll receive surgery again, but it doesn't appear to have a big effect on patient survival, according to a study in the January 15 Journal of the American Medical Association.

USPSTF seeks comments on colon screening plan
In a move that could eventually lead to Medicare reimbursement for virtual colonoscopy screening, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) on Thursday opened to public commentary a draft research plan for colorectal cancer screening.

CT utilization data suggest physician ownership plays role
An analysis of CT utilization data at a large health insurance plan suggests that myriad factors -- including physician ownership of the practice and the government insurance status of the patient -- shape the likelihood that a patient will receive a CT scan.

Residents at odds with ABR regarding protected study time
Residents aren't marching in lockstep with the new American Board of Radiology (ABR) policy when it comes to study time for the new core exam, according to results of a survey of residents and faculty at a Pennsylvania hospital that were presented at the 2013 RSNA meeting.

CT colonography sheds light on 'disappearing' polyps
About 10% of all polyps detected at CT colonography can't be found at initial colonoscopy follow-up. But the reasons for their disappearance are largely predictable, according to a study presented at the 2013 RSNA meeting.

Survey shows stable radiology job market
Residents may not be thrilled about the tough job market, but data from a massive annual survey of radiology jobs show little change from year to year, and the results even predict a small net gain in jobs for 2013 and beyond, according to a presentation at the recent RSNA 2013 meeting.

CT with MBIR boosts vulnerable plaque assessment
Model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) can help identify vulnerable plaque at CT, potentially improving prediction for a particularly dangerous source of cardiovascular events, according to a study presented at RSNA 2013.

Data sampling technique cuts CT lung dose to 0.25 mSv
How low can chest CT doses really go? Researchers from Boston may have bested even the chest x-ray, the ultimate low-dose scan, using a special data sampling technique to produce diagnostic-quality CT lung screening scans at doses as low as 0.25 mSv.

CT-guided biopsy aces bony lesion diagnosis
Egyptian researchers found that CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy is accurate and effective for diagnosing lesions of the appendicular long bones -- offering a much-needed solution to the problem of indeterminate x-rays, according to an article in the European Journal of Radiology.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
